You are to write a prepared speech of between 2 to 3 minutes on a topic of your own choice. This task is your homework for the next 3 weeks, and you can be assisted in class as well.
This year, the speech needs to be presented in a persuasive context. In this type of presentation, the speaker needs to convince the audience about their chosen topic, why it is the best/most suitable/favourite etc. and have arguments to support their opinion.
Whatever topic you choose you must aim to:
- Be creative/original with your introduction. e.g. No, "My name is...and I am going to talk about..."
- Avoid topics that would not be suitable for school;
- Keep your audience interested (E.g. use of humour, audience response etc);
- Be well prepared for your speech (be enthusiastic, watch the way you stand and be natural in gestures you use); and
Your speech must be ready to present to the class by Monday June 4th – Week 6 Speeches will be presented on different days during that week. Names will be drawn at random.
You are encouraged to use palm cards for your presentation, but these are not compulsory. Class teachers will be happy to preview your speech notes/ palm cards in advance to give you advice. Don't leave your task until the last minute – ask if you are unsure!
There is a copy of the marking rubric below. It will help you to understand what we are looking for in your speeches.
The two students who score the highest marks in the class will progress through to the school finals which will be held on Monday 29th June, Week 9. Class winners will be notified.
Thank you Stage Two teachers,
